A couple of weekends ago we went car shopping. Don’t ask. It was painful. Needless to say, we decided to pass on the one we wanted. So we came home and on Sunday, decided to wash and clean out both cars thoroughly – be grateful for what you have, right?

Years ago (guess from my Eagle Scout experiences) I decided to put a crate of emergency supplies in the back of both cars – blanket, bottled water, jumper cables, etc. I also bought two roadside emergency kits with flashlights, first aid kits, etc. in them.

ER KitGuess what – both flashlights had dead batteries, the fix-a-flat can was empty from a previous use, the first aid kit was missing several pieces, and the jumper cables were actually in the garage! So I spent several hours and a few dollars updating everything.

Morale of the story – get your emergency kits in the car ready to perform, before you need them! Guess what? Business relationships work the same way! I’m amazed at how many people ONLY reach out when they need something! “Where were you the other 364 days of the year?” “When was the last time you called and simply asked how I or my business was doing?”

I’ve long believed in three types of business relationship builders: Givers, Takers, and Investors! Which one are you? How do you know? If I randomly reached out to a dozen people who know you, which one would they say you are?

Don’t wait till your car breaks down, at night, in the rain to figure out that you don’t have the right supplies or the tools you need aren’t working. Similarly, don’t wait till you’re out of a job, the pipeline is dry, or you’ve become irrelevant to invest in your business relationships.
